We are looking for a highly trained and experienced mental health and education specialists to work as a WAB Elementary School Counselor. The main function of a counselor at WAB is to promote and support the development of the whole student through the delivery of quality and age appropriate services for students. This service may encompass social, emotional and/or behavioral concerns as well as academic advice. The preferred service delivery model is one that will utilize primary, secondary and tertiary interventions.

The successful candidate will have the ability to establish effective communication and working relationships with staff, students and parents, a sound understanding of current counseling approaches appropriate for an international school setting and recent, successful experience as a counselor. We expect our faculty members to have at least Bachelor's degree studies, a teaching/counseling certificate and a minimum of two year's of working experience.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Role Description / Working Relationships

Counselors are highly trained mental health and educational specialists. The principle function of an Elementary counselor at WAB is to promote and support the development of the whole student through the delivery of quality and age appropriate services for students. This service may encompass social, emotional and/or behavioral concerns as well as academic advice and placement. The preferred service delivery model is one that will utilize primary, secondary and tertiary interventions.

A counselor at WAB is a member of a learning community and is expected to support and promote the elements of the IB Learner Profile. The Elementary School Counselor reports to the Elementary School Principal.

A counselor at WAB is expected to actively promote, support and strengthen the vision and values of the school.

 

A counselor at WAB will have duties that may include:

  1. Conducting individual, family and group counseling in response to identified needs and referrals
  2. Planning and conducting information workshops for parent and staff groups in response to identified needs
  3. Providing classroom and small group instruction on issues within the curriculum that are relevant to counselor skills and knowledge
  4. Ensuring the smooth transition of students and families into and out of WAB by providing information, counseling, and workshops
  5. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team to identify and support students with additional needs
  6. Working with the WAB Admissions Department in supporting students to enter and exit the school
  7. Academic counseling as appropriate

 PERSON SPECIFICATIONS

The successful applicant is expected to have the following skills, abilities, knowledge and experience:

Qualifications

  • The individual should hold professional qualifications that are equivalent to eligibility for registration as either a Psychologist or Social Worker in their country of origin AND/OR educational qualifications with significant work experience and additional training in behaviour management or counseling areas.
  • We also require the selected candidate to have a school counselor degree or certificate.

Personal skills and abilities

  • To have a love of children and young people and a desire to partner with and support them to resolve issues or concerns
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with staff, students, parents and outside agencies.
  • To be an active, energetic and collaborative member of the counseling team and broader school teams
  • To be efficient in managing time and priorities
  • To be able to develop and maintain current confidential records.

Knowledge

  • A sound understanding of current counseling approaches appropriate for an international school setting
  • Understanding of issues impacting on children and families in transition in an international environment

Experience

  • Experience of implementing a comprehensive school counseling programme that promotes student success, provides preventative services, response to identified student needs and delivers group programs to different audiences preferably in a school classroom setting.
  • A minimum of two years experience as an Elementary School counselor
  • Experience in design and delivery of group programs to different audiences, preferably in school classroom settings
